The Senior Mechanical Engineer is an integral part of product development team that creates innovative customer solutions for the life sciences industry. Senior Mechanical Engineer reports to Engineering Leader and is responsible for independent evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out a sequence of engineering tasks. This position works under a low level of supervision with a high level of independent work. Independent technical decisions on work are covered by precedents and seek direction/guidance on novel or controversial problems. In addition, this position may participate in project specific relationship building with Customers and Suppliers.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  1. Plans, schedules and coordinates detailed phases a project.

  2. Devises new approaches to problems encountered.

  3. Participated in and promotes process improvements within assigned areas.

  4. Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices, but includes a variety of complex features, such as conflicting design requirements and non-standard materials.

  5. Provides direct support of sales and development by sharing information in the form of proposals and design reviews.

  6. Independently troubleshoots/analyses system problems.

  7. Independently writes and performs complex component tests.

  8. Dispositions hardware independently.

  9. Sets technical direction on complex projects to level I – II engineers.

  10. Responsible for converting marketing requirements to system or product specifications and creating physical representation of product in both solid models and detailed drawings.

  11. Makes decisions regarding dimensioning and tolerancing.

  12. Ensures design meet reliability and process capability criteria.



Education and Experience

  1. BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent required

  2. Post-graduate technical degree preferred

  3. Greater than 5 years of experience in related field required, including post-graduate experience

  4. Solid experience with integrated product development and verification required

Skills and Competencies

  1. Effective written and verbal communication skills including presentations to customers, peers and executives. Writes and communicates technical reports. Solid technical writing skills (procedures, reports, etc.)

  2. Competent complex problem solving/troubleshooting skills.

  3. Effective design risk management using Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA).

  4. Ability to operate effectively in the project team environment and communicate with Customers.

  5. Working knowledge of standards and the ability to apply complex set of standards into designs. Ability to quickly learn, interpret and apply new standards.

  6. Competent use and application of FEA tools, solid use of DFSS tools and methodologies, solid knowledge of engineering quality systems (NPD, Engineering Change, Configuration Management), solid ability to interpret steady state results. Assist with development of department and organization procedures

  7. Complete understanding of component functions and testing requirements. Understands advanced manufacturing processes, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.

  8. Effective time management skills.

  9. Development of intellectual property.

  10. Mentor level I & II engineers.

Computers and Technology

  1. Proficient in Solidworks, Pro Engineer or other CAD software

  2. Solidworks Simulation, ANSYS or other FEA software

  3. Infor Visual, JD Edwards or other ERP systems

  4. Advanced requirements management tool such as IBM Rational DOORS or similar

  5. Microsoft Office Suite and other productivity applications
